    Weather in Ireland during fall

Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable (hello rain!), and fall is no exception. In September, you’ll still get a bit of summer with highs around 60 to 65°F (15 to 18°C). By October, things cool down to 50 to 55°F (10 to 13°C). But it also depends on the region you’re visiting in Ireland as well.

Rain is a given…it’s Ireland, after all! How else is this gorgeous place so lush and there so many rainbows?

Showers often come and go quickly, so if you’re not a fan, just wait 15 minutes, or an hour and it will likely change!

Fall also means colorful landscapes. Forests and parks burst into shades of orange, red, and gold, adding a whole new layer of magic to Ireland’s natural beauty.

What to Pack for Ireland in September and October

You’ll definitely want to pack a variety of layers for the daytime and evening! Long sleeves and add a sweater, jacket or medium coat.

Pants and even layers are helpful. I was super glad to have lined, waterproof pants during my very wet time in Ireland!

Long skirts or dresses may be comfortable in the sunshine or the peak of the day. But definitely layer up at night!

The style in Ireland is very casual and comfortable. While I don’t recommend joggers or yoga pants, jeans are popular as well as slacks or trousers.

Definitely pack comfortable, waterproof shoes for your trip to Ireland! With an abundance of rain, you definitely don’t want to walk around in wet shoes all day.

You’ll want to be ready for sun, rain, and chilly wind…all in one day. Here are a few essentials I always recommend:

    • Rain jacket: Absolute must-have. Even if it looks sunny, rain can surprise you in the next 15 minutes!
    • Water-resistant walking shoes or boots: Ireland’s charm is best explored on foot, from cobblestones to muddy trails. I loved my Vessi’s for the cities and towns and boots for everything else. And my feet were dry with no issues!
    • Layered clothing: T-shirts, long sleeves, and sweaters you can easily add or remove.
    • Jeans or water resistant pants: Practical for both city strolling and hikes.

Think comfort, versatility and waterproof everything. That’s the winning packing formula for Ireland in the fall!

      Ireland highlights in the fall

One of the benefits of visiting Ireland in September or October is that it’s not nearly as busy as the summertime. You’ll be able to get around Dublin, rent a car to explore more of the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland easily.

Outdoor activities are still generally comfortable, as it’s warmer than the winter in Ireland. However, you may find that indoor alternatives are the perfect getaway from the rain when the weather hits.

And then there are the festivals. Fall in Ireland is full of unique celebrations that make your trip even more special.

      • Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival (September): tastings, music, and fun in one of Ireland’s liveliest cities.
      • Dingle Food Festival (October): perfect for foodies, with local markets, tastings, and cooking demos.
      • Halloween in Ireland (October): rooted in the Celtic festival of Samhain, Halloween actually originated here! (Something I didn’t know until I visited in the fall!) Expect spooky tours and authentic traditions.
      • Cork Jazz Festival (October): one of Europe’s biggest jazz events, filling the city with music and nightlife.

Between the quieter attractions, lower prices, and lively local events, fall might just be the most underrated time to see Ireland!

Ireland in September and October – that’s a wrap!

Fall in Ireland isn’t just beautiful, it’s one of the smartest times to go. With lighter crowds, better deals, and festivals that bring Irish culture to life, September and October offer a mix of authenticity and charm you won’t get in the busy summer season.

Add in golden foliage, misty mornings, and cozy evenings by the fire, and you’ll see why autumn is the perfect time for a vacation to Ireland.
