With rugged coastlines, I was so impressed with this underrated region in Canada. It’s wild, remote and extremely welcoming. And while I packed a lot in during my time here, my only wish is that I had more time to experience more of this beautiful place.

Let’s dive into the allllll the reasons you’ll fall in love with Cote-Nord Quebec!

Why you should visit Côte-Nord

It’s off the beaten path in Quebec, and oh so worth the trip!

1. The Otherworldly Mingan Archipelago

With hundreds of limestone islands scattered across the water, dotted with wildflowers and puffins, you’ll love this national park. The Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve is one of the most surreal landscapes in Canada.

You can take a boat tour from Havre-Saint-Pierre or Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan to see the famous monoliths. These are giant rock formations sculpted by centuries of wind and sea.

Hike, kayak, or even camp overnight on one of the islands in the National Park Reserve. It truly feels like stepping into another planet!

2. Epic road trip on Route 138

Route 138 is the ultimate coastal road trip in Quebec. You’ll drive past wild rivers, waterfalls, lighthouses and beaches perfect for a picnic.

It’s also known as the Whale Route in this part of Canada from May through October.

My favorite stops were…

  • Crab sandwich for lunch at Casse-Croute du Pecheur in Sept-Îles (delicious!)
  • Manitou Falls
  • The beaches at Longue-Pointe

3. Waterfalls, waterfalls, waterfalls

I was seriously blown away by the number and volume of waterfalls in Cote Nord Quebec!

My favorite was visiting Manitou Falls, along Route 138. It’s a pretty remote spot, but worth the stop between Sept-Îles and Havre-Saint-Pierre. Be sure to hike to the bottom for the best views!

👉Pro tip: wear layers and bug spray, especially in the summer months. I found this natural insect repellent worked pretty well!

4. Charming coastal villages

One of my favorite things about the Côte-Nord region in Quebec is how genuinely welcoming the people are. You’ll find small fishing towns like Tadoussac, Les Bergeronnes, Baie-Comeau, and Sept-Îles that each have their own charm.

I was honestly blown away not only by the scenery and food, but also the hospitality of the locals. I had a similar experience in Leitrim, Ireland. It makes traveling fun, and while kindness shouldn’t be unexpected, it’s definitely nice to be surprised by locals while traveling.

5. Whale watching galore

Wild Orcas – not super common but they do love the St. Lawrence!

If you’ve ever wanted to see whales up close, Côte-Nord is the place. The cold, nutrient-rich waters of the St. Lawrence River attract blue whales, humpbacks, minke whales, belugas, and even the occasional orca.

Seeing them in person is definitely one of those “I can’t believe this is real life” travel moments you’ll replay in your mind forever.

There are 13 species of whales and marine mammals that frequent the waters along Route 138 from May to October, and it’s worth scheduling your trip during those months to maximize your chances of seeing marine life!

6. Enjoy the other wildlife, too

Beyond whales, Côte-Nord teems with wildlife. Take a tour of the Mingan Archipelago to Île aux Perroquets (AKA Puffin Island)! Home to over 1200 puffin couples, it’s certainly a sight to see in person!

I was fortunate enough to see Harbour Seals several times during my stay in Cote Nord Quebec!

Whether on land, sea, or sky, Côte-Nord delivers those National Geographic moments that make you fall in love with nature all over again.

7. Fresh (and delicious) seafood and other delicacies

If you’re a foodie (or even just love a good meal after a day of exploring), Côte-Nord will spoil you. After traveling all over the world from Greece to Thailand to the Caribbean, I can honestly say some of the best seafood I’ve ever eaten was in Cote Nord!

Think buttery scallops, crab, mussels, and lobster caught fresh from the St. Lawrence…the list goes on! I didn’t realize just how many seafood options I’d have here!

Oh, and don’t miss trying cloudberry jam. It’s a tart northern berry that’s used in pies, jams, sauces and even cocktails.

I first learned about it at the Maritime Museum in Sept-Îles. Then seemed to run into the delicious flavor everywhere. I even brought some jam home to my family to share!

8. The wild beauty of the St. Lawrence River

Côte-Nord’s coastline is so rugged and dramatic. The St. Lawrence River starts as a wide river channel, then as you head east, it widens so massive it feels like an ocean, lined with cliffs and rocky beaches.

I had to keep reminding myself it was still a river. It finally flows into the Atlantic at some point, which is why there’s so much wildlife in the river!

With endless viewpoints, picnic spots, cute towns and tiny harbors, this is seriously just an awesome place to visit. And with the sound of lapping waves is your only background noise…yes please!

9. Endless outdoor adventures

If you love being outdoors, Côte-Nord is your playground. From camping along the river, hiking trails that wind through dense forest to kayaking along sea cliffs, there’s no shortage of ways to explore.

It’s an adventurer’s playground, for sure. I loved hiking, camping and exploring the region. I can’t wait to go back!

10. Find your peace

In a world that’s always “on,” Côte-Nord is refreshingly quiet. Truly off-the-beathen path, you’ll find yourself breathing deeper and noticing nature’s details. Gah!

It’s the kind of place that fills your soul without trying. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or even with friends who crave nature, this region reminds you how big and beautiful this world really is.

Côte-Nord isn’t polished or packed with tourist traps, and that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s wild, authentic and really beautiful in its own way.

From whales and waterfalls to amazing seafood feasts, you’ll surely fall in love with this place. So next time you’re planning a trip through Québec, skip the crowds and point your map north and head to Côte-Nord!
