It’s a laid-back getaway in the Pacific Northwest that really comes alive during the summer months. With plenty of things to do on San Juan Island to fill a day or a week, this is a fun vacation destination!

Whether you’re traveling to the San Juan Islands for a day trip or a weekend getaway, there’s no shortage of things to do on the island. Perfect for families, a girls’ trip or a couples’ getaway, this island is an underrated gem in Washington state!
Note: this guide focuses on Friday Harbor within the San Juan islands. Orcas Island will be on my list for my next visit to the area!
How to get to the San Juan Islands
Real quick – before we get started, I just wanted to que you into the ferry situation.
- You’ll want to make a reservation for the day and time, so spaces don’t sell out. Do this as far in advance as possible.
- Be prepared to get to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal and hour early.
- You can drive a car or walk onto the ferry – whatever is most convenient for you!

Alright enough chatting already, here’s the list of the best activities in and around Friday Harbor!
1. Visit San Juan Islands National Historical Park and 4th of July Beach
Once you’re off the ferry, hit the road and begin your adventure at the San Juan Islands National Historical Park. One of the most underrated gems on this island is 4th of July Beach, I’m sure of it.
History buffs can explore the grounds where the American flag during the Pig War in 1859. Today, it’s a stretch of rocky coastline, perfect for a picnic and the enjoying the sounds of the gentle waves lapping on the rocks.
The beach offers beautiful views that make for perfect spot to dip your toes in the water or have a picnic.
2. San Juan Islands whale watching tour from Friday Harbor
One of the top things to do on San Juan Island is to take a whale watching tour! This whale watching tour departs from Friday Harbor, which makes it super convenient whether you’re staying for a day or a weekend getaway.
These tours offer not only the possibility of spotting magnificent orcas but also the chance to see humpbacks, porpoises, and other marine life. The experienced guides share fascinating insights about the geography and local marine life.
A tour like this reminds me of a whale watching tour I took in Kihei Maui, when we saw plenty of humpback whales!

3. Go shopping in Friday Harbor
Friday Harbor is not only the islands’ main port but also a fun spot for some shopping. Wander through its streets lined with boutiques, galleries and gift shops.
You’ll find everything from high-end art to unique souvenirs, like puzzles of the area or clothing and goods made by indigenous peoples.
Shopping here supports local artisans and businesses, making it a worthwhile and rewarding when you’re on an island like this. Whether you’re looking for clothing, artwork, books or handcrafted jewelry, you’ll likely find something to take home.
4. Check out the iconic Cattle Point Lighthouse
No island visit is complete without a trip to the historic lighthouse. Named after Cattle Point Birds that live in the area, this lighthouse is one of the best things to do in the San Juan Islands, Washington.
The lighthouse was built in 1888, and was operating until 2004, Today, it’s just a building to go visit. You can’t go inside, just see the exterior of it.
Getting there is easy – it’s only about a 20 minute drive from Friday Harbor then it’s a short walk on a trail to the lighthouse. This is for sure one of the top San Juan Island things to do!
5. Check out The Whale Museum
At The Whale Museum, located in Friday Harbor, learn about the fascinating world of marine biology and conservation. The museum offers exhibits on the ecology and behavior of whales, particularly the orcas commonly seen around the islands.
It’s a great educational experience for all ages, providing so much information into the marine environment and the efforts to protect it.
Interactive displays make it engaging for kids and adults alike. I really loved that the museum is a central spot for conservation efforts, for the area in the protection and conservation of whales and their habitat.
6. Experience peace at the Westside Preserve
When you’re considering what there is on the San Juan Island things to do, look no further than the Westside Preserve for a quiet activity.
Westside Preserve offers a raw and untouched look at the natural beauty of the San Juan Islands. This protected area is known for its exceptional opportunities to observe orca whales from the land. The quiet trails and undisturbed landscapes make it a prime spot on the island for some peace from the busy town.
The views are beautiful, and the chance to see orcas in their natural habitat is something truly special. I actually saw a Harbor Porpoise from the Westside Preserve!
The Westside Preserve is unique as it was purchased by the people of San Juan County. The island’s commitment to conservation makes it not only a beautiful place to visit but also a crucial sanctuary for marine life.
Note: be sure to stay on the trail here (and literally anywhere else you may hike), and watch out for snakes! I saw two of them on the trail at the preserve.
7. Kayaking in San Juan Islands
Bring your kayaks or paddleboard to explore along the coastline of this pretty island. Better yet, take a kayaking tour of the San Juan Islands to truly explore the area!

8. Dine with a view at Downriggers

Enjoy a meal to remember at Downriggers, where the food is as awesome as the views! This waterfront restaurant specializes in seafood, and it’s a spot you don’t want to miss.
The outdoor seating area offers a fun views of the harbor, making it a prime spot for a romantic dinner or a special family meal. I especially loved the blackened Halibut tacos – they were delicious!
I visited with a large group, and every person enjoyed their meal. So basically, you can’t really go wrong!
9. Tour the island on the Friday Harbor Jolly Trolley
Okay, so this is a fun experience, especially if you don’t want to worry about getting a reservation for your car and driving it onto the ferry and around the island.
You can experience the charm of Friday Harbor and San Juan Island from the Jolly Trolley. This hop-on, hop-off tour is narrated by a knowledgeable guide, providing the highlights of the island without the hassle of driving. The trolley passes by historical sites, shops, and eateries, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

10. Go whale watching at Lime Kiln Point State Park & Lighthouse
Okay, so let’s first talk about the whale season in the San Juan Islands, which runs April through October, with peak season being June, July and August. And if you’re planning your San Juan Islands vacation during July or August, consider yourself lucky – or maybe just prepared!
Lime Kiln Point State Park is the best whale-watching site on the island. (Although taking a tour to see them up close is another awesome option!) The park’s unique location on the west side of the island provides visitors with frequent whale sightings, especially orcas swimming in the deep blue waters below.
The historic lighthouse adds a charming touch to the overall scene, and you learn about the area’s maritime history in Lime Kiln Point State Park.

11. Hike the Jackle’s Lagoon Trail
Next up, grab your shoes or hiking boots for hike on Jackle’s Lagoon Trail. This relatively easy hike is perfect for families or anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors without a strenuous climb.
Bring your binoculars and a camera, as the trail is a hotspot for birdwatching and wildlife sightings!
This trail actually has 3 options…and we all like options, right?
- Self-guiding Nature Walk: 1 mile loop, rated easy. Hooks up with the Mount Finlayson Trail.
- Lagoon Trail: 3 mile out-and-back trail, rated moderate.
- Mount Finlayson Trail: 3 mile loop, rated moderate. This version includes a climb to the peak of Mt Finlayson, at 290 feet.
None of these trails are super difficult – it’s not like you’re hiking the Skyline Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, with an elevation climb of over 1700 feet. But these trails will be good for some activity and to work up a bit of a sweat on a warm day.
12. Hang out with the alpacas at Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm (a favorite on this list of San Juan Island activities)
Let’s mix it up and enjoy a lighter, fuzzier kind of fun at Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm!
Here, you can meet and feed the friendly alpacas, learn about their care, and even shop for alpaca wool products like sweaters and blankets. It’s a delightful experience for families or anyone looking to add a bit of fun to their travels.
The farm offers information throughout that explains the fascinating process from fleece to fabric, highlighting the sustainable practices used to maintain the health and happiness of the alpacas. It’s a fun, educational stop that offers a different pace and perspective on life on this island.
13. Explore on two wheels with a bike rental
For a fun and flexible way to see the island, consider renting a bike! I found most of them were electric, which does help in some areas of the island with the hills. The island is very bike-friendly, and is a great activity, especially in the warm summer months.
Then you can get a little exercise in while enjoying the sights, too! It’s definitely one of the top San Juan Island things to do!
14. Visit the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park
The far north end of the island offers a fun, unique attraction: San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. Here you can see over 150 sculptures by local and international artists, which are displayed across 20 acres.
This outdoor park allows you to wander through the 5 self-guided trails. The admission is free, although it recommends a $5 donation per adult in your group. Some of the sculptures are even available for purchase!
This is one of the most unique things to do in the San Juan Islands, for sure!
15. Grab some ice cream
What’s a vacation without a little indulgence? The San Juan Islands has a few several ice cream shops where you can enjoy homemade treats in up to 72 flavors!
From classic chocolate to huckleberry cheesecake (my favorite!), these ice cream parlors offer the perfect sweet treat to enjoy as you wander the scenic town of Friday Harbor.
16. Soak in views at Roche Harbor
Roche Harbor isn’t just a place—it’s an experience. This historic seaside resort offers a taste of luxury with its beautifully restored accommodations, waterfront dining and lush gardens. Walk the docks, where yachts and sailboats come and go, or indulge in a spa treatment for some pampering.
The harbor is also a beautiful place for a nice walk in the summertime, if you already have accommodations on the island.
17. Stroll and soak in the views from the pier
Take a leisurely stroll along the pier, where you can watch as ferries and boats of all sizes come and go, carrying both residents and visitors to and from the island.
I especially loved looking at the names on all the boats. People are so creative!
18. Screen print a shirt for a custom souvenir
For a truly unique souvenir, try your hand at screen printing a custom shirt!
There’s a fun shop in Friday Harbor where you can personalize a design and get it printed right in front of you. It’s a fun activity for all ages and gives you a custom piece of clothing to remember your trip by.
