Lobster rolls? Check. Sunset sailing? Check. Swimming beach? Check.

And so much more. Let’s dive in!

Visit the heart of Newport: Bowen’s Wharf

Bowen’s Wharf, Newport

Bring on the nautical vibes! Bowen’s Wharf is a staple in Newport. It’s where the charm of the harbor meets shopping and seafood.

A bunch of sailing tours take off from the waterfront area with sailboats, while cute boutiques and restaurants line the area with tons to look at as you walk around.

You can also visit nearby Hammetts Wharf or Brown and Howard Wharf, but I found Bowen’s Wharf to have the most entertainment and options.

Drive (or bike) Ocean Drive

Want to see the most iconic road trip in Rhode Island? Head on over to Ocean Drive. It’s a 10-mile stretch of winding coastal road that passes huge Cape Cod style homes and a beautiful coastline.

The highlight for me was the most southern point, and the Portuguese Discover Monument at Brenton Point State Park. It’s really cool to stop at the southern tip of Rhode Island!

Castle Hill Lighthouse (one of the best things to do in Newport RI)

Visiting Castle Hill Lighthouse

Located just minutes from the harbor and along the Ocean Drive, the Castle Hill Lighthouse is worth the stop, especially if you haven’t seen a lot of lighthouses.

This little guy is nestled on rocks, and is unique in that you arrive by walking up towards the top of it and take steps down below to see it up close.

Note: there are signs saying the rocks are slippery. So if you’re planning to go to the base level for photos, bring grippy shoes with you to walk on the nearby rocks and coastline. I didn’t wear my favorite shoes the day I visited the lighthouse, but Vessi shoes would be great for this little trek!

Newport Harbor at King Park

The quieter side of Newport

If you’re wondering what to do in Newport Rhode Island with less crowds, then the Harbor Walk at King Park on the south and west side of the wharf is a pleasant place to soak in the views without all the noise.

There’s a statue of Rochambeau on the site, with historical markers about Newport Harbor and the importance of the harbor for history and modern day living.

This stop is as you start out on the Ocean Drive!

Fort Adams State Park for history harbor views

I’m seriously so amazing at how much history is in New England! Make time in your Newport Rhode Island itinerary for a stop at the Fort Adams State Park.

My daughter and I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the large fort. You can take a guided tour that are offered several times a day as well. And of course, more harbor views surround the state park!

(This is also on the way to the Ocean Drive!)

Swim at Easton’s Beach

Beautiful Easton’s Beach

Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach is Newport’s largest public beach and a perfect spot to swim in the warm summer months, or lounge throughout the year. Bring your swimsuit, mineral sunscreen, and maybe a picnic – there’s a boardwalk, snack bar, and even a carousel if you’re traveling with kids.

Part of the beach is reserved for surfing while the other part is for swimming. Parking is a bit pricey, but that’s pretty common for this area.

Dogs are allowed in the off-season, but not during the peak of summer.

Cliff Walk for mansions and ocean views in Newport

Sooo many mansions to view on the Cliff Walk

For some fresh air and stunning views, head to the Cliff Walk. This paved, 3.5‑mile out-and-back trail runs right along the rocky coast, offering lookout points to see grand Newport mansions on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. It’s so scenic it’s designated as a National Recreation Trail and officially dates back to the 80’s.

You can start at Easton’s Beach, or hop on at various other points in the trail.

Pro tip: bring sturdy shoes. Most of it is paved or gravel, but some is rocks where you’ll want something more grippy or sturdy than sandals!

    Mansion tours

    The Breakers Mansion at dusk

Newport is famous for its Gilded Age mansion tours, and walking through these estates is jaw-dropping. Think marble halls, crystal chandeliers, servant tunnels and stories of wealth rivaling royalty.

Of all the things that Newport is known for, this one surprised me most!

The most famous mansion offering tours is The Breakers. It’s a famous Vanderbilt estate built between 1893–1895, and is pretty insane.

You can book an individual tour within the mansions, or tour all of them. I like this mansion tour that includes the interior of The Breakers then the exterior of several other mansions – without the worry of parking.

Fall in love with the local seafood

No visit to Newport, Rhode Island is complete without fresh, local seafood. Try lobster rolls, clam chowder, oysters, scallops, mussels, seafood pasta and so much more!.

I love that there is so much fresh seafood in Newport, and it’s locally caught. My family dined on the delicious variety for several days while in Newport!

Note: try the crab cakes at The Black Pearl. Best crab cakes I’ve ever eaten!

    Shopping in Newport

For allllll the nautical things, clothing and home accents, there’s a ton of shopping opportunities in Newport Rhode Island! Shops line the streets at the wharfs, the historic district in Newport and all around the waterfront.

You’ll find such cute boutiques, art galleries, T‑shirt shops, bookstores – really anything you’re looking for. My daughter even bought my husband ghost pepper sauce from a hot sauce store!

    Sunset cruise

Hop on a boat for sunset!

On a boat at sunset? Yes, please! Sail past lighthouses, mega-yachts, and historic homes as you venture all around the area. A sunset cruise is a perfectly relaxing way to get your bearings and see Newport from the water.

Cruises are offered throughout the day, but I personally love a good sunset cruise, just like the one I did in Orange Beach Alabama. I honestly think the sunset cruise is one of the best things to do in Newport Rhode Island.

Here’s your one day itinerary for Newport Rhode Island

Add ice cream into your day in Newport!

It’s possible to do all of this in one day! It will be a completely full day, and honestly is better broken into at least 2 days to make it more leisurely.

But if you only have one day in Newport, here’s what I’d recommend:

    • Morning: head out on Ocean Drive. See Fort Adams, Castle Hill Lighthouse and Brenton Point State Park.
    • Late morning: take a mansion tour; The Elms, Breakers or Marble House
    • Afternoon: hang out at Easton’s Beach then do the Cliff Walk
    • Evening: head to the waterfront for shopping and dining, or opt for a sunset cruise

Then work in the delicious seafood when you can! Breakfast, lunch and dinner if possible.

What to do in Newport Rhode Island – that’s a wrap!

Ah geez! Can you even believe this fun waterfront town? I feel like this travel guide has barely scratched the surface, but I wanted to make it attainable for first-time visitors to the area.
