Best mountain towns Colorado
As someone who’s vacationed in this area many times over the years, my favorite spots are in this guide. I hope you enjoy!
1. Grand Lake (one of my favorites on this list of small Colorado mountain towns)
Nestled at the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake is a paradise for mountain lovers. The town surrounds Colorado’s largest natural lake, where you can fish, kayak, paddleboard, or just enjoy a day on a boat.
Often overlooked as a stop when exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, this charming mountain town is so much more than a quick stop! Having vacationed here on two separate occasions, I can easily say it’s one of my favorite spots in all of Colorado.
Be sure to bring your paddleboard or kayak, or rent it at the marina to enjoy some time on the lake. And grab ice cream after – there’s several adorable spots to enjoy a sweet treat!
While I’ve only visited during the summertime, it’s worthy of a vacation in winter was well. The snow transforms the area into a snowy wonderland, perfect for snowmobiling and ice fishing.
2. Central City
Once known as the “Richest Square Mile on Earth,” Central City is filled with history from the Gold Rush. Nowadays, it’s famous for its casinos and the Central City Opera House. The historic district is full of old-time architecture and stories of the gold rush era, offering a blend of culture and history.
Located north of Idaho Springs (see #11 below), it makes a great stop before an epic road trip on the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, which is one of the best scenic drives in Colorado. Make a day of it, or spend your entire vacation exploring the quaint streets of Central City and nearby Black Hawk.
3. Breckenridge
Breckenridge is not just a ski destination; it’s a year-round vacation destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Its Victorian Main Street is lined with colorful buildings, boutiques and art galleries. Epic Discovery at Breckenridge offers families tons of fun activities you’ll love.
From alpine roller coasters, to museums, breweries and hiking, Breckenridge has so much to offer vacationers looking for charm! And while you’re in Breck (as the locals call it), be sure to visit the Breckenridge Troll!
In winter, the slopes are alive with skiers and snowboarders, while summer brings hikers and mountain bikers to the scenic trails. Breckenridge also hosts fun festivals throughout the year, so there’s always something exciting happening.
4. Steamboat Springs (best Colorado mountain towns for year-round fun)
Also known as Ski Town, USA, Steamboat Springs is an amazing winter vacation destination. With perfectly white covered mountains for snowy activities, you can also relax in one of the many hot springs in the area as well!
I’ve only visited Steamboat Springs in the summer, and I can tell you, the charming mountain town in Colorado has plenty of events and festivals, not to mention hiking activities to enjoy. The quaint downtown area is chalked full of shops and restaurants, complete with a fun western flair.
The Yampa River runs through the heart of Steamboat Springs, providing ample water activities as well. There’s so many reasons Steamboat Springs is one of the best Colorado mountain towns!
5. Vail
Known worldwide for its luxurious ski resort, Vail captures the essence of mountain chic. The town boasts some of the best ski slopes in the world, and its Alpine-inspired architecture makes you feel like you’re in a fancy European village.
During the summer, the town of Vail is ripe with hiking, mountain biking and spa activities. But Vail Village is where a lot of the action happens. The cobblestone streets will take you to different regions of the world based on cuisine and what’s in the nearby shops. Restaurants and shops are plentiful here, but also be sure to soak in the beautiful natural features like the streams running through the village.
For a calm and relaxing day, visit the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, the highest botanical garden in North America. There’s so many things to do in this adorable mountain town in Colorado!
6. Georgetown
Step back in time in Georgetown, a well-preserved Victorian village. Grab a cup of coffee at a cozy spot, shop for Christmas anytime of year at the holiday store, or enjoy some light shopping in this picturesque mountain town.
One of the town’s major tourist attractions is the Georgetown Loop Railroad. It offers scenic views of the Rockies, plus so much history in a short, one hour ride. My kids loved it!
The town is also a gateway to the Guanella Pass, known for its stunning fall foliage and amazing hiking trails.
7. Dillon
Dillon is a small town known for its stunning reservoir, a popular spot for sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. The Dillon Marina offers boat rentals and sailing lessons, if you don’t have your own.
Nearby, you can hike or bike the many trails, or visit in winter for cross-country skiing. My favorites are the Sapphire Point Overlook and the Old Dillon Reservoir Trail. Be sure to check out the Dillon Amphitheater for outdoor concerts with a view!
Downtown Dillon offers visitors fun breweries, restaurants and shops. There’s so many things to do in Dillon, Colorado, you won’t be bored!

Gah! Can you believe this list?! With a mix of popular vacation towns (for a good reason!) and underrated gems, there’s still more to go on this list of the best Colorado mountain towns.
8. Estes Park
The base camp for Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park is the perfect spot for wildlife watching and mountain adventures. But the town is so much more than that!
The cute downtown area features shops specializing in handmade crafts and local art. You can shop book stores, ice cream shops and other specialty items. Grab some food at a plethora of restaurants in downtown, too.
Afterwards, take the boardwalk along the river and be sure to visit the hummingbird sanctuary.
You can also tour The Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s novel “The Shining” while in Estes Park. Nearby Lake Estes is perfect for those looking for water activities, too. Rent boats, kayaks, paddle boards and more if you don’t have your own!
Whether you’re here for the trails or the shopping, Estes Park has something to offer every visitor.
9. Glenwood Springs (one of my favorites on this list of the best mountain towns in Colorado)
Known for its massive hot springs pool, Glenwood Springs is a fun spot for a quick getaway. The adorable downtown Glenwood Springs easily makes this list of the best Colorado mountain towns for its fun shops, restaurants and views.
You can also explore the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park where you can ride a gondola to get panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. This is the only mountaintop amusement park in America, where you’ll find plenty of adventure for everyone in your travel group.
I’ve visited Glenwood Springs in the winter and the summer, and it’s truly a perfect year-round destination in Colorado!
10. Frisco
Frisco is a charming town on the shores of the Dillon Reservoir. It’s known for the Frisco Adventure Park, where there’s year-round adventure for thrill seekers. In the winter, you can tube down snowy hills, cross-country ski and snowshoe. During the summertime, visitors can enjoy the bike or skate parks.
Frisco’s Main Street is filled with cute shops and cozy eateries, making it perfect for a leisurely day out. Grab gelato, wander the shops and get a bite to eat. The Frisco Historic Park & Museum gives a glimpse into the town’s mining-era past, and is located central to downtown.
11. Idaho Springs (another favorite on this list of mountain towns in Colorado)
A gateway to the mountains, Idaho Springs offers a peek into Colorado’s gold mining history. Take a tour of the Argo Gold Mine and Mill, which even includes panning for gold, which my kids loved!
If you’re adventurous, white water rafting on Clear Creek provides a rush of adrenaline, with rapids suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. After a day filled with adventure, the Indian Hot Springs—an attraction since 1859—offers a perfect place to unwind with its mineral-rich thermal waters, caves, and indoor and outdoor pools.
The fun downtown area is similar to the other Colorado mountain towns on this list with plenty of shopping and dining experiences. A unique spot to eat is Beau Jo’s – which offers “Colorado style pizza” which is actually really delicious!
Whether you’re exploring its historical sites or enjoying the natural landscapes, Idaho Springs provides a picturesque and exciting escape in the heart of Colorado.
12. Eagle
Eagle, Colorado, might not be as widely known as some of its mountain neighbors, but it’s a hidden gem if you’re looking for both adventure and relaxation in a less crowded environment. Situated in the heart of the Rockies and one of the more western locations on this list, Eagle offers a genuine small-town atmosphere combined with access to some of the best outdoor activities Colorado has to offer.
Eagle’s landscape is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The town is surrounded by expansive trails perfect for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. My personal favorite nearby activity is hiking and kayaking at Sylvan Lake State Park.
Eagle’s downtown area is charming, with locally owned shops, breweries, and restaurants that showcase the town’s community spirit. There’s a variety of events throughout the year, which celebrate local culture and bring people together through music, food, and outdoor activities all in one place.
In winter, while Eagle itself isn’t a ski town, it’s conveniently located just a short drive from world-class ski resorts like Vail and Beaver Creek, making it a peaceful (and cheaper) home base away from the usual tourist crowd.
13. Nederland
Located in the heart of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, this quirky mountain town has a free-spirited vibe, with a diverse community of artists and musicians. One of Nederland’s most enchanting attractions is the Carousel of Happiness, featuring 56 hand-carved animals, which is truly a sight to see in real life!
Nederland is full of fun an quirky shops and delicious eateries, which can be a nice stop while on a scenic drive or fun exploring over a long weekend.
The nearby Eldora Mountain Resort offers skiing less crowded than the bigger resorts, making it a favorite among locals. During the warmer months, Nederland has a ton of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing nearby.
14. Colorado Springs (one of the best mountain towns in Colorado)
Slightly larger than the other towns on this list, Colorado Springs offers a mix of natural beauty and historical sites.
Best known for the stunning Garden of the Gods, this is a must-see park with towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Take a drive through the jagged peaks or take one of the hikes, like the Siamese Twins Trail, which is a fun one for all ages – even dogs!
Colorado Springs has so much more to offer! The city’s downtown area is bustling with creativity, featuring numerous galleries, museums, and theaters. For a taste of local life, head to Old Colorado City, the historic district where charming boutiques, fine dining, and artisan shops line the streets.
Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, historical exploration, or cultural enrichment, Colorado Springs offers something for everyone, and is completely deserving of a spot on this list of fun mountain towns in Colorado!
15. Silverthorne
Just a stone’s throw from several major ski resorts along I-70, Silverthorne features a large outlet mall for those who enjoy shopping. Its close proximity to wildflower-filled hiking trails in the summer and ski slopes in the winter makes it a great base for year-round adventure.
Silverthorne is a popular mountain town for its thriving arts scene and community-focused events. The Silverthorne Performing Arts Center, home to the Lake Dillon Theatre Company, offers a diverse lineup of plays, musicals, and concerts, enriching visitors’ cultural experiences in the mountains.
