15 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting the Cayman Islands

Ahhhhh, the Cayman Islands – three gorgeous Caribbean islands with warm turquoise waters are a dream destination for beach lovers, divers and anyone looking for a tropical escape. However, even though it’s a popular destination, there are things I wish I knew before visiting the Cayman Islands.

Whether you’re planning a week away or just stopping on a Caribbean cruise, these are the must-know tips that will make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

Located in the British West Indies, the Cayman Islands have British influence but are wholeheartedly full of culture and fun! From the calm vibes of Little Cayman to the dramatic coastline of Cayman Brac or the tourist hub of Grand Cayman, there’s so many options here.

Essential Cayman Islands travel tips for first time visitors

After spending a healthy amount of time in the Cayman Islands, here are the things I wish I knew before coming to this part of the Caribbean…

1. The beaches are even better than you imagine

Seven Mile Beach 😍

When you think of the Cayman Islands, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the beaches. And trust me, they are everything you’ve heard about and more. Seven Mile Beach, in particular, is a world-famous stretch of white sand, calm waves and plenty of amenities.

Once you’re there, you’ll fall in love and you’ll understand why it ranks as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean! It’s perfect for relaxing, walking, or taking a dip in the crystal-clear water. It reminds me of the gorgeous white sands of Grace Bay, one of the best beaches in Turks and Caicos.

But here’s the kicker to the beaches: not all beaches are the same. Some are perfect for swimming or snorkeling, but many are not. Some are full of seaweed or have rocky shorelines.

The best spot for swimming on Grand Cayman is Seven Mile Beach, without a doubt. Whether you’re staying at a resort right on the beach or are visiting, you’ll find plenty of public access points to get to this gorgeous sand.

2. It’s pronounced Cay-Man

You’ve probably heard the Cayman Islands pronounced incorrectly your whole life. I know I had!

But while visiting the Cayman Islands, I noticed the radio stations kept saying “Cay-man” instead of “Cay-mun” so when I took a tour, the guide told us the locals pronounce it Cay-Man!

    3. There’s plenty to do on and off the beach

I was pleasantly surprised by how much you can actually experience in the Cayman Islands. From all the best things to do in Grand Cayman like exploring the natural beauty of the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, to taking a tour to Stingray City, there’s always something to see and do.

A visit to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman is also highly recommended if you have extra time. Both are quieter and offer different vibes compared to Grand Cayman. You’ll need a flight to get there though, no ferry or boat options are available.

    4. Grand Cayman is a huge cruise ship destination

If you’re coming for the day, well you simply won’t see enough of Grand Cayman! It has sooo much to offer, one day isn’t enough for this gorgeous island.

BUT as someone who’s taken an Aegean Sea cruise and only spend one day in Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Thessaloniki, etc, I totally understand maximizing your vacation to visit a lot of places!

So what does this mean when you’re visiting Grand Cayman? Well, day tours are popular and busy, and many restaurants and shops hold hours according to the cruise schedule.

You can actually check the Grand Cayman cruise schedule so you can see just how busy things will be!

    5. Cayman Islands are actually affordable

It’s true – you can absolutely spend a ton in the Cayman Islands, especially when it comes to accommodations. But you can also find more budget-friendly choices as well!

For example, you can grab some delicious jerk chicken or rum bread at a local food stand or small restaurant for a fraction of the price compared to the upscale and touristy spots.

I was surprised to find some affordable options on VRBO in Grand Cayman.

If you want a bougie experience, stay at The Westin on Seven Mile Beach.

For a budget-friendly option, try House on the Hill or other wallet-friendly stays.

    6. Renting a car is the best way to explore

One thing I didn’t realize before my visit was how spread out everything is. While public transportation is available, renting a car is the best option if you truly want to see everything these islands have to offer. It gives you the freedom to explore all the islands at your own pace and find hidden gems off the beaten path.

    7. Drive on the left and prepare yourself

After visiting many Caribbean islands, I can say without a doubt that Grand Cayman has more round-abouts than any other island I’ve seen!

Traffic generally flows smoothy because of them, but as a foreigner, driving on the left side of the road and around round-abouts can take some getting used to.

Many of the larger intersections have signs that tell you which lane to stay in based on where you need to go, which is helpful!

    8. There’s lots of wildlife options (not all of them good!)

As someone who’s passionate about the humane treatment of animals and to avoid keeping animals in captivity for tourism, I have mixed reviews about some popular spots in the Cayman Islands.

I researched/visited for the purpose of creating this article, but did NOT pay or have any experiences with Dolphin Discovery or the Cayman Turtle Centre.

But I did LOVE visiting Stingray City, which is a natural phenomenon near Grand Cayman.

Year ago, fishermen would clean their cuts at a sandbar and throw out scraps. Soon stingrays learned to go the same time everyday. Then people went to see, fed them, they made it home.

Now with all the tourist boats they are fed and happy and constantly swimming the area.

Just be sure to go with a reputable tour company that treats them right!

    9. The Cayman Islands are super safe

Safety is always a concern when I’m traveling, especially when I take solo trips, like my time in the Cayman Islands. I was happy to find that the Cayman Islands are one of the safest Caribbean destinations.

I felt comfortable walking around the island everywhere I went. The locals are incredibly friendly and helpful, and there’s a strong sense of community here.

    10. Snorkeling and diving are top-notch

Gorgeous dive sites like this among the Cayman Islands😍

Listen, I’ve been to many Caribbean islands. And the diving in the Cayman Islands reigns supreme. Known as a diving and snorkeling haven, the underwater world around these islands is vibrant and full of marine life.

For diving, try the Bloody Bay Wall on Little Cayman, Wreck of Kissimmee on Cayman Brac or the North Wall at Grand Cayman.

While there are plenty of dive tours and dive spots around the 3 Cayman Islands, there’s also a plethora of snorkeling beaches too. Look for sea turtles, sting rays, barracudas, and so much more!

    11. It’s hot while visiting the Cayman Islands

I mean, of course it’s hot – it’s in the Caribbean, right? Well, every time I visit the Caribbean, I’m always astonished with the heat and humidity.

Exploring the best beaches in St. Croix – hot.

Learning all about the history and culture in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico – hot.

Going on a budget trip to Turks and Caicos – hot.

So you guessed it, it’s also hot in the Cayman Islands! But that just means that you’ll want to spend time in the water. And when you’re not, wear clothing that keeps you cool, long sleeve swimming suits or rash guards to avoid the powerful sun.

Try to schedule non-water activities for the morning, like a Crystal Caves tour or visiting the Cayman Parrot Sanctuary in Grand Cayman.

    12. Keep cash on hand

While visiting the Cayman Islands, most places on the island accept credit cards, but you’ll definitely want to carry cash as there’s some places that don’t. Especially restaurants and shops off the tourist spots.

And if you pay in US Dollars, you’ll get your change in Cayman Islands dollar (KYD).

    13. A dream spot for foodies

If you’re a foodie, the Cayman Islands will not disappoint!

From fresh seafood to delicious Caribbean flavors, there’s a lot to savor here. Local foods include fresh conch fritter, jerk chicken, goat curry, ceviche or oxtail. Oh, and anything made with local rum – yum!!

    14. It’s a great place for families

Planning a Caribbean vacation with kids? The Cayman Islands are an amazing destination for families! I’d bring my kids back here in a heartbeat!

And unlike some places that focus on all-inclusive activities, this island definitely didn’t give off huge party vibes.

Between the Stingray City experience, the amazing beaches and activities off the water, there are plenty of things to do that will keep the whole family entertained.

Don’t miss the Cayman Islands National Museum, where the kids can learn about the history of the islands, or the Cayman Island’s Botanical Gardens where kids can search for the Blue Iguana and Cayman Parrots.

      15. The local culture is rich and welcoming

Last but certainly not least are the friendly locals and hospitality of the island! The Cayman Islands are home to a rich cultural heritage that’s reflected in its art, food, and way of life.

I loved all the local shops that had artisan finds instead of cheaper items made overseas. Handmade soaps, mugs, trinkets, jewelry, art – the list goes on!

I found the people on the island genuinely kind. Like letting you in the flow of traffic when it seem impossible to turn. Or everyone telling you to enjoy the rest of your day.

The people of the Cayman Islands are warm, welcoming and proud of their island!

That’s a wrap on tips for visiting the Cayman Islands!

Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation or a mix of both, the Cayman Islands are a destination you won’t regret exploring.
